SELECTIVE SERVICE REQUIREMENT

A statement of military selective service status and proof of draft registration must be turned into the Registraršs Office. In accordance with Louisiana R.S. 17:3151, no person who is required to register for the federal draft under the federal Military Selective Service Act shall be eligible to enroll in any postsecondary educational institution until such person has registered for such draft and provides evidence of having done so. The federal Military Selective Service Act requires male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the United States, who are 18 through 25, to register with the Selective Service. The Louisiana law provides for two exceptions:

(1) A veteran of the armed forces of the United States may submit a copy of his discharge papers or his discharge certificate as evidence of compliance with this law.

(2) A person who has not registered for the federal draft shall be eligible to enroll in the institution if both of the following occur:

(a) The requirement for the person to register has terminated or become inapplicable to the person.

(b) The person makes a showing satisfactory to this institution that the failure to register was not a knowing and willful failure to register.
