Dr. Stella Nesanovich, retired professor of English in the English and Foreign Languages Department at McNeese State University, was recently honored by the university with Professor Emeritus status.
Nesanovich received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Louisiana State University in New Orleans (now the University of New Orleans) and both her Master of Arts and doctorate degrees in English and American Literature from LSU in Baton Rouge.
In 1982, she joined the faculty of McNeese as an assistant professor of English where she provided 27 years of outstanding service to the university and its students as a faculty member until her retirement in May 2009.
During her career at McNeese, Nesanovich authored three books of poetry and edited a fourth book and published over 100 poems and short stories in such recognized journals such as the Southern Review and Piedmont Literary Review. Her achievements include a Louisiana Division of the Arts Artist Fellowship and her selection as a finalist for the Foley Prize from America magazine.
At McNeese, she consistently earned above average ratings for her excellent teaching, served on a variety of committees for the department, College of Liberal Arts and university, directed graduate theses for English students and taught English courses ranging from freshman composition to graduate literature. In addition she has authored numerous scholarly articles and reviews of recent and contemporary authors in various poetry anthologies and collections.
In her retirement, Nesanovich continues to write and serves on the editorial board of the poetry journal Vineyards. She has also established the Leo Luke Marcello Endowed Poetry Reading Series in honor of the late McNeese professor and poet Marcello through the McNeese Foundation.
Emeritus status is specifically granted to honor retired faculty and administrators who have made distinguishing professional contributions and have served significant portions of their careers at McNeese. Only a select few receive this recognition for their service to the university.
