Sowela and McNeese have signed a memorandum of understanding to provide faculty and staff of Sowela with reduced tuition when enrolling in McNeese courses.

"This agreement will allow Sowela's faculty and staff to pursue a degree and/or an advanced degree at a much more economical tuition rate which will further encourage them to expand their pedagogical expertise and knowledge base," said Dr. Neil Aspinwall, Sowela chancellor. "This is just one example of the efforts that have been made between Sowela and McNeese to build stronger collaborative partnerships between the two colleges."

Sowela and McNeese increasingly work hand-in-hand with transferrable credits and other programs.

"McNeese and Sowela are here to work together and complement each other. When we do that the entire region benefits," McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams said.

"Collaborative agreements such as this help build stronger institutions of higher education that better meet the needs of the citizens of Southwest Louisiana," Aspinwall said. "Sowela and McNeese make great partners, and I am very excited about exploring new ways the two institutions can work closer together to become the colleges of choice for people in Southwest Louisiana."

Sowela last week earned candidacy for accreditation from the Southern Association of College and Schools. McNeese currently holds SACS accreditation.

To earn SACS accreditation, Sowela's faculty must hold certain higher-education credentials, which can be obtained at a school such as McNeese. Accreditation will also ensure seamless transfer of certain academic credits from Sowela to McNeese.

"We are excited about Sowela's achievement of SACS candidacy status. SACS accreditation will strengthen our partnership with Sowela and we are ready to assist their faculty with obtaining academic credentials necessary to meet this goal," Dr. Jeanne Daboval, McNeese provost and vice president for academic and student affairs, said.

The reduced tuition is available to all full-time staff and faculty of Sowela who seek a degree that will support Sowela's SACS accreditation.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sowela employees can apply the reduced credit hour tuition to six hours per semester of undergraduate or graduate level courses at McNeese. They would still be responsible for certain fees such as the operational, technology and parking fees.

"This is another example of the great partnership between our institutions and our combined commitment to enhancing higher education services in Southwest Louisiana," said Dr. Rick Bateman, Sowela's vice chancellor of academic affairs.
