Pianist Fred Sahlmann, left, bass-baritone Bret Smithey, pianist Lina Morita and trumpeter Dave Scott prepare for Scott’s collaborative recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at First Methodist Church in Lake Charles.
Trumpeter Dave Scott of McNeese State University will perform in a chamber music recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at First Methodist Church in Lake Charles. He will be joined by pianists Fred Sahlmann and Lina Morita and vocalist Bret Smithey, all of the department of performing arts at McNeese.
Scott describes the free recital as a “musical conversation between friends.”
“Two veteran members of the McNeese faculty and two newer faculty members will perform together. This performance will illustrate the continuing tradition of wonderful music at McNeese,” Scott said.
The program will include “Wachet auf!” from Cantata No. 20 by Johann Bach; “Et Misericordia,” by Francescantonio Valotti; “To Cast a Shadow Again,” by Eric Ewazen; “Three Poems, op. 20,” by Edward MacDowell; and “Chorals,” by Jean Langlais.
Sahlmann and Morita will also perform a “four-hands duet” by American composer Edward MacDowell, according to Scott.
Scott, a former recipient of the Alexander Endowed Professorship in Music, has performed as a recitalist and clinician with the Louisville Orchestra, Palm Beach Orchestra, Spokane Symphony, Lake Charles Symphony and the Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra. He has served as an artist at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which facilitates the annual Grammy Awards.
Sahlmann is faculty emeritus at McNeese. A graduate of Elon University, Columbia University and the Eastman School of Music, he previously studied at the Academy of Music in Vienna, Austra, as a Fulbright scholar. Morita, also a pianist, has performed in various solo and chamber music venues across the U.S. and abroad. Select performances include the Church of Epiphany Concert Series in Washington, Bertramka Hall in the Czech Republic and the Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Japonesa in Brazil. Morita has degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Rice University and Indiana University.
Smithey, a bass-baritone vocalist, has sung with opera companies throughout the U.S., including the Knoxville Opera, the Chattanooga Opera, the Princeton Opera and the National Opera Company, in productions that include “Don Giovanni,” “Midsummer Nights’ Dream,” “Romeo et Juliet” and “Carmen.”
Lamar Robertson, music minister of First Methodist Church, is recital host.
