  Sergio Ruiz to perform in guest recital Oct. 25

The McNeese State University department of performing arts will present guest pianist Sergio H. Ruiz in a free recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in Ralph Squires Hall.

A California native, Ruiz has collaborated with members of the Houston Symphony, New World Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. His performances on Spanish-speaking radio broadcasts have aired throughout South and Central America. Ruiz, supported by a Wagoner research grant, studied in Barcelona, Spain, under the tutelage of renowned musician Alicia de Larrocha. A graduate of Rice University, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Santa Clara University, Ruiz is currently preparing an edition of the piano chamber music of Spanish composer Enrique Granados and recently performed Rachmaninov’s “Second Piano Concerto” and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with the orchestra of Sam Houston State University, where he is director of keyboard studies.

The program will include Chopin’s “Sonata in B Minor, Op. 58,” Mozart’s “Sonata in B-Flat Major, KV 570” and Ginastera’s “Sonata No. 1, Op. 22.”
