LPB to Rebroadcast Keith Gates' "An American Requiem"

Louisiana Public Broadcasting will re-broadcast statewide "An American Requiem" by Keith Gates on June 4. It will be shown at 10:30 p.m. on LPB-HD.

"An American Requiem" was written by the late composer Gates in memory of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. LPB dedicated the program to Gates, who was a music professor at McNeese State University.

LPB filmed the performance of the piece during a McNeese Banners Series program in March 2007. The requiem was performed by the McNeese Wind Symphony and the McNeese Chamber Singers. The solo parts were sung by the Voices of London through a grant from the Southern Arts Federation.

The half-hour television show includes excerpts from the music, an interview with Gates and narration by Lake Charles Mayor Randy Roach. It will also include footage of the Sept. 11 attacks, courtesy of ABC News, Good Morning America. The program will close with a rendition of "America the Beautiful," performed by the McNeese Chamber Singers and Wind Symphony, with background images by Tika Laudun, senior producer at LPB.
