  MSU Choirs Spring Concert May 8

The McNeese State University department of performing arts will present the McNeese State Choirs in a free spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in Ralph Squires Recital Hall at the Shearman Fine Arts center. Groups featured include the Concert Chorale, Women’s Vocal Ensemble and the Chamber Singers.

Concert Chorale will perform “Kyrie Eleison” by Leonhard Lechner; “Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden” by Georg Philipp Telemann; “He Watching Over Israel,” from “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn; “The Three Ravens” arranged by Stephen Porter; “Brotherhood of Man” from “How To Succeed In Business Without Trying” by Frank Loesser, arranged by Mac Huff; and “Ain’t Got Time To Die” by Hall Johnson, arranged by John Purifoy.

The program for the seven-member Women’s Vocal Ensemble includes “Sunrise” and “Evensong” from “Four Sacred Songs for the Night”; “We Sing To Spring” by Claude Debussy; “Dôme Épais” from “Lakme” by Leo Delibes, arranged by Francisco Núñez; “The Nightingale” by Thomas Weelkes; “Bought Locks” by Peter Mennin; and “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans,” written by Eddie DeLange and Louis Alter and arranged by Kirby Shaw.

Chamber Singers will present a variety of musical styles. Selections include “Ehre Sei Dir, Christe,” from “The Passion According to Matthew” by Heinrich Schütz, “Ave verum corpus” by William Byrd, and “Ah, Holy Jesus” by Johann Cruger, arranged by John Ferguson and accompanied by Michael Buckles, assistant professor of strings. Four movements of John Rutter’s “Requiem” will be performed – “Requiem aeternam,” “Out of the Deep,” accompanied by Emiles Robinson on cello; “Pie Jesu,” featuring soprano soloist Ashley Pierce; and “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” accompanied on oboe by Beverly Jones. Other selections include “Homeland” by Z. Randall Stroope, “The Lobster Quadrille” by Irving Fine, “Four Slovak Folk Songs” by Béla Bartók, “I Will Be Earth” by Gwyneth Walker and “Circus Band” by Charles Ives, accompanied on the four-hand piano part by Karen Ganz and Lina Morita.

The groups will perform under the direction of Darryl Jones, director of choral activities and will be accompanied by Lina Morita, assistant professor of piano.
