The McNeese student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management was recognized as one of the top 10 Outstanding Student Chapters in the nation for 2010-2011 at the recent national SHRM conference in Las Vegas, Nev. The McNeese State University student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management has been named one of the top 10 Outstanding Student Chapters in the nation for 2010-2011.
This award recognizes SHRM student chapters whose programs, activities and levels of participation during the academic year distinguish them from other chapters. Other top 10 university chapters include Villanova University, Utah State University and the New York Institute of Technology.
McNeese’s SHRM chapter has 38 members and two faculty advisers—Mary Kaye Eason, instructor and coordinator of support services, and Dr. Susie Cox, assistant professor of management. Last year’s president was Angelica Gonzalez. The chapter is sponsored by the Imperial Calcasieu Human Resource Management Association.
“This chapter is focused and on task,” said Eason. “We were so excited about receiving this award. Our students worked hard to earn this recognition and the McNeese student chapter of SHRM is a very strong and active organization in the College of Business.”
The SHRM Outstanding Student Chapter Award is given in recognition of significant activities within the specific areas: promotion of certification, campus/community service, innovation/technology, programming/education, and recruitment.
“Student chapters only needed to meet one of the criteria but our chapter met two of those – campus/community service and programming/education – with its inaugural Student Leadership Conference in April 2010,” said Cox. “This program was designed to provide professional development, leadership training awareness and networking opportunities for students as they transition from college to careers.”
Fifty McNeese students – representing all majors on campus - attended the spring event and were matched with sponsors by major in order to facilitate networking and to allow students the opportunity to learn about leadership from professionals in their chosen field of study. The conference also included combination video and live speaker presentations on various topics followed by round table discussions led by employer representatives.
At the end of the conference, a brief feedback survey was conducted and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The chapter held its second conference in April 2011.
Eason said the McNeese chapter is on a roll because it also received a 2010-2011 Superior Merit Award designation for an exceptional job of providing opportunities for growth and development to its student chapter members. “This is the highest national recognition given to any student chapter.”
The chapter was required to complete at least 50 activities to receive a Superior Merit Award. These included workshops on resume building, professional development, using social media for career development and dressing for success, as well as bringing in professional speakers and volunteering at fall and spring career fairs.
“Paige LaRocca, our current chapter president, was responsible last year as senior vice president for monitoring the superior merit award process to make sure we stayed on track to earn it. She did a great job,” said Eason. “To be eligible for the outstanding student chapter award, the chapter had to earn a Superior Merit Award designation first.”
A record 138 SHRM-affiliated student chapters participated in this year’s national merit award program. “These chapters worked extremely hard this year. Their efforts to provide networking and educational programming to human resources students and to increase their exposure to the field of HR are evidence of their desire to achieve,” said Chuck Salvetti, SHRM’s student and young professional programs manager.
