Molly Reid is an editor at The Historic New Orleans Collection, a museum, publisher, and research center located in the heart of the French Quarter. A former journalist for the Times-Picayune, Reid served as head researcher for the HBO program Treme and specializes in New Orleans music history. In addition to working at THNOC, where she is editor-in-chief of the institution's quarterly magazine, Reid is currently finishing her master's in musicology at Tulane University.
Molly Reid will discuss the incredible life story and multivaried career of jazzman Danny Barker. Through his innate curiosity, career as a touring musician, practice as a writer, and sheer longevity, Barker built a magnificent trove of knowledge about the world, which he shared in stories, songs, interviews, and books includes memories of jazz greats such as Jelly Roll Morton, Cab Calloway, and Dizzy Gillespie. His autobiography, A Life in Jazz, brought back into print by The Historic New Orleans Collection in 2016, was his first solo-authored work, and it represents 40 years of Barker's struggle to be taken seriously by the publishing world. In addition to discussing Barker's life, Reid will trace his career as a writer, storyteller, and scholar of black life and music.
