Arts & Crafts
Basketry
All participants receive the personalized instruction needed to create
intricate baskets in one enjoyable and relaxing evening. Choose one or
more of the following basket projects. A: The Mardi Gras Wall Basket is
woven flat to an 8-1/2 " D- handle. The wall basket is decorated
with Mardi Gras colors and embellished with Mardi Gras treasures. It can
hold Mardi Gras arrangements or beads. B: The Easter Bunny is a bunny
cut out on a 10" slotted wooden base. The sides are woven with space
dyed pastels that are flat, oval, and round weave. C: The Kids Easter
Basket is for ages 9 and up. It is a 5x10 base with a 5" Williamsburg
handle. The sides are woven with space dyed pastel. This is an ideal
class for parents and children. D: The Umbrella Basket has an 8² square
woven base and stands 18" tall. It has 4" of accent color that is your
choice. You can chose from any of the following: blue, green, red, wine,
teal, and pastels, one week in advance. E: The natural color Vanity
Wastebasket has a 4x6" slotted woven base and stands 12" tall. It has
two rows of triple twining for decoration.

Bookmaking by Hand

Create a colorful hand-bound book using a fan-fold technique. Combine
free-form watercolor techniques, pop-up design and collage materials
(such as photos, photo transfers and emulsion prints, wire, ribbon and
other found objects) to make a one-of-a-kind book that may be used as an
album, journal or sculptural art object.

Comic Book Artistry 101
A class where creative minds can come alive and really show the world
what is in their heads. Comic Book Artistry 101 needs no experience,
although a will to learn and a creative imagination are welcome. Getting
started with the basics; shades, shapes, and anatomy; are fundamental
and will be taught early on. Along with the basics, small tips and
tricks will allow you to evolve into a more skilled comic artist.
Learning techniques is a primary emphasis, but fun and creativity also
play a great part in this class. The more the pupils want to learn, the
more they will learn. A 3 to 4 page comic will be the main goal. The
students will create their own characters, plots, and worlds to direct
at will. Total creative liberties are given to the students; if they
think it, they draw it. A short supply list will be available at
registration. Ages 12-Adult.

Donna Dewberry's One Stroke Painting
Students will learn to create beautiful projects using a fun and stress
free painting technique. Instructor will provide paints and various
supplies including the Reusable Teaching Guide to practice with in class
and to take home for future use. Also simple design patterns for all
classes. The Leisure Learning office will provide a list of additional
supplies that students will be required to bring for each class.
Additional supplies and practice guides will be available for purchase
from the instructor after class. Classes are limited to 12 students in
order to give personal attention.
Donna Dewberry's Basic Strokes for Beginners
Learn the basics. How to load paints on brushes. The use and care of
brushes. Students will also learn to paint various leaves and flower
petals, basic to forming a design. Rose and Sunflower design will be
taught. This class is to learn and practice the technique only, no
project surface is provided.

Drawing and Painting People
Master this easy to understand approach for capturing character and
likeness. Even if youıve never drawn before, you'll be surprised at
how easy this form of art becomes once youıre armed with the basics. If
youıve painted before but need help in this area, you'll appreciate an
experienced critique. Instructor works with individuals at their own
level of ability and if you choose to work with other supplies, feel
free to experiment. This is a relaxed class, full of fun. There are no
failures here!

Made of Clay
Enjoy the personal satisfaction of creating objects in earthenware clay
for functional or decorative use. In this class, the instructor will
guide you through the basic techniques AND BEYOND of hand-forming
platters, tiles, bowls, cups, pitchers- even tabletop sculptures! You
will decorate your wares with a variety of techniques using colorful
slips and glazes for firing in an electric kiln. The basic skills for
working in clay are easy and natural to acquire. The pace of the class
is relaxing. Students of all levels are welcome with close attention
paid to beginning students. An additional supply fee of $45 is payable
to the instructor at the first meeting. Clay, glazes, tools, and molds,
equipment and firings are provided. Bring an apron, or wear clothes you
donıt mind getting dirty.

Paint Your Own Masterpiece: A Beginnerıs Oil Painting Course
Copying works by the great masters is a fun and productive way of
learning painting basics. This course is designed for persons with no
previous painting experience. The third in the series will be a seascape
by Winslow Homer. There will be no drawing necessary for this painting.
A short supply list will be available at registration.

The Paper Tole Institute
Paper Tole Workshops and Seminars
Paper tole teacher certification is available through the Paper Tole
Institute. These Paper Tole workshops will help meet the requirements
for certification. A complete listing of requirements will be mailed
upon request. Students who bring their own scissors, cutting board,
knife, blades, glue, coloring pencils and shaping tools can deduct $8
from the supplies fees. If you wish to purchase the supplies, they will
be offered for sale at the workshops. Supply fees will be payable to the
instructor at the workshop. A one-time registration fee of $2 is applied
to each registrant.

Paper Tole Project Furring Small Wolf
The student will learn furring techniques using a simple animal. They
will also learn how to put the furred pieces together for realistic

Anton Pieck Advanced Class
In this class we will study a number of different Anton Pieck prints and
determine how to make rooms, buildings, streets and alleys featured in
each of the prints. A small Anton Pieck project ³The Goose Girl² will
be completed in class using advanced techniques. This is an all-day
class with a short break for lunch.

Beginning Photography: Shooting and Developing
This course will offer the amateur photographer the basics of 35-mm
camera operation. The instructor will cover topics such as f-stops,
shutter speeds and film types, as well as discuss composition and
picture taking techniques. Students should bring a 35-mm camera to
class. Students will receive, shoot and develop a roll of film in an
automated color-processing lab. A $20 additional supply fee made payable
to the instructor at the first class meeting includes film, developing
and lab fees. Want to learn the basics but not ready to invest in a
camera? Limited use of a loaner camera may be available.

Black & White Photography
A continuation of Beginning Photography, Black & White Photography
takes students through the entire photographic process. In addition to
metering light, exposing and processing B&W 35mm film, students will
learn to develop negatives, make contact sheets, enlarge images, and
mount prints. Each student will produce and take home an 8x10 print
suitable for framing. A $20 additional supply fee made payable to the
instructor at the first class meeting includes film, developing and lab
fees.

Photography: Polaroid Image Transfer and Emulsion Transfers
Explore this alternative method of printing. Transfer images from slides
onto watercolor paper using Polaroid 669 film. At the first class
meeting students will observe the techniques and learn to capture images
on slide film. The second class meeting will be a workshop where
students will learn to transfer images from their photograph. A $20
additional supply fee is made payable to the instructor at the first
class meeting.

Learn to make many easy single pieces (units) which can be combined to

Scrapbook Level I
Do you keep your photos stuck in a shoebox in the closet? Is the idea of
creating an attractive, photo-safe album daunting? In this class, youıll
start to create your own album and learn techniques for organizing,
cropping, layout, mounting, and journaling. There is an additional
supply fee of $60 payable to the instructor. Supplies include all
acid-free products: a fifteen-page album, photo cropper, scissors, pen,
pencil, adhesive, stickers, and mounting paper.

Scrapbook Level II
Are you ready for a sensational scrapbooking system? Hang onto your
photographs, this dynamic lesson may blow you away! Many boxes of
photographs can be overwhelming but the momentum of this workshop will
help you divide your album completion into easy steps. This method will
save you time by organizing each page in advance and storing them neatly
in a box until you mount and journal your pages at your convenience.

Stained Glass for Beginners
Create your own artistic design and bring it to life in the shimmering
colors of stained glass. The ancient art of glasswork is an artistically

that they can take home to display as their first works of glass art. A

Wood Carving: Caricature Bunny
Carve a small caricature bunny for Easter from a rough cutout. Your
bunny will not look like any other bunny. In caricature a droopy ear or
misshapen eye gives character; different feet and crooked tail add
personality. A few basic tools such as a carving knife and a few hand
gouges are required. We will show you how to sharpen these tools and how
to handle them safely. A protective glove is required. A simple
inexpensive tool list will be mailed with your registration receipt. You
will have an enjoyable time creating your own caricature.

Basic Financial and Estate Planning Under the 2001 Tax Law Changes
The provisions of the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act
of 2001 are complex. It has sometimes been called the "Cinderella meets
Rip Van Winkle" Act because some provisions take effect immediately and
some are phased in over a number of years. The seminar is designed to
provide information and examples of how you can take advantage of the
new law, increase your net worth, and develop a basic estate plan.
Estate Planning is substantially more than tax planning. It includes
ultimate estate distribution, potential protection of heirs or

Beginning Computer
This three-night course will comfortably introduce you to computers.
Learn the differences between floppy disks versus hard disks, RAM

Great Decisions Discussion Group
Any individual with an interest in expanding his/her knowledge of
international relations as well as engaging in active discussion of
crucial global issues is welcome to join Great Decisions. Participants
read short articles in the well-researched briefing book prior to the
group meeting. Then, all discussion group members can come together from
the same point of reference, with the same facts and basic understanding
of the issues to be discussed. At the conclusion of each discussion,
participants fill out opinion ballots, which are tabulated for the
National Opinion Ballot Report. Through this report, participants'
opinions on U.S. foreign policy issues are presented to the White House,
the departments of State and Defense, members of Congress. The timely

Arrowhead Making
The hectic pace of the modern world got you down? Get a little
perspective with a night of neolithic technology by taking this course
in the lost art of making and using stone tools. The technique of
fashioning flint blades and arrowheads was once the fundamental skill of
all our ancestral cultures. Stone blades are remarkably efficient tools,
and with a little practice, are relatively easy to make. In this one
course, students will learn through lecture, demonstration and personal
instruction the craft and physics of stone-blade making as they create
arrowheads they can take home. Children may register with an adult.

Birding in Southwest Louisiana
The program begins on Thursday evening with a "Birding Basics" clinic
presented by members of the Gulf Coast Bird Club. Where you will learn
about field guides, binoculars, and other basic birding tools. You will
also learn about bird identification and spotting skills. We will talk
about good local birding areas, and how to develop your own backyard
into an attractive place for various bird species. Next a guest speaker
will give a program on a specific birding-related topic, as part of the
Gulf Coast Bird Clubıs regular meeting. On Saturday, join the Gulf
Coast Birding Club for an all-day field trip to Southwest Louisianaıs
birding hotspots. Spring migration in Southwest Louisiana is an
excellent time to see many species of birds, because our geographic
location is one of the first landfall spots for Trans-gulf migratory
birds. Be prepared to see many exciting species of birds! Participants
must provide their own transportation for the Saturday field trip and
should also bring binoculars, lunch, water, appropriate protective
clothing, sunscreen and insect repellent. Children are welcome when
registered for the class and accompanied by an adult.

Concealed Handgun
This course fulfills the training requirement for those wishing to apply
for the Louisiana Concealed Handgun License but is also open to anyone
wanting to learn about handguns. Topics covered include firearm
selection, tactics, basic marksmanship and safety. There will be eight
hours of classroom instruction and up to four hours on the pistol range.
A personal weapon is not required for target practice. The fee covers
everything except targets and ammunition. Each session is limited to 20
students.

Fishing at Jim Bel's Hackberry Hilton Hunting Club
Jim Bel invites you to the Hackberry Hilton Hunting Club for a morning
of fishing. Novices, as well as old timers, are invited to fish for
redfish, flounder, drum, speckled trout. Jim will talk with us about the
work involved in balancing the ecology of the marsh for aquatics,
animals and fowl. Bring your fishing pole, warm clothing, camera (the
geese will be flying), hot or cold drinks and ice chest for your fish. A
limited number of fishing poles are available on a first-registered
basis. Lunch at the Hunting Club is included. Prior registration by
Thursday, February 21 and a signed Hold Harmless form are required for
participation.
Children are welcome when registered for the class and accompanied by an

Golf Instruction
It's been said that only good things can happen on a golf course,

shaving strokes from your score. Geared to all levels of golfers.

Nature Hike at Kisatchie: Search for the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker
The nature walk entails a slow moving hike where we may stop frequently
to observe residential wildlife of signs of their presence. While hiking
through the forest we hope to observe various species of animal within
their habitats. Some of the breeding birds in the area we may encounter
are pine warbler, brownheaded nuthatch, hooded warbler, Carolina wren,
American Kestrel, and many others. During our hike we will stop and have
a snack near a forest pond before we attempt to locate the endangered
red-cockaded woodpecker. These birds roust in the evenings, so if you
plan to sight them be prepared to wait until dusk. We will meet in the
McNeese Library Parking Lot for 2:00 p.m. departure. Participants are
required to provide their own transportation for this outing. Long
pants, sun block and mosquito spray are recommended for this hike. Bring
food, drink, and plenty of water. Youıll want to bring your cameras and
binoculars for this opportunity to sight such a rare bird of the south.
