Harbor Naval Base Performance
|
The Kickers were invited a second time to perform at the Naval Base since their first invitation of spring 2004. The event not only saluted the sailors, submariners, and other naval staff but also dedicated the performance to the survivors of Hurricanes’ Katrina and Rita from Louisiana. The performance included a mixture of past routines, original choreography from many team members and productions from the Directors. The 45 minute show was truly a team effort with many hours of practice, conflicting logistics, and many efforts of bringing 25 very busy young ladies together to make the evening spectacular for the sailors. |
The team performed live at Liberty in Paradise, which is the home away from home for the single sailors on free time. MWR, the sponsor of the event, held a free BBQ for the Kickers and sailors which at the time it was like old friends meeting. The young ladies really represented our pride of southern hospitality and made good conversation with every single person with class and dignity. They signed the calendars that were distributed and took photographs for the occasion. The Kickers performed outdoors and with the island weather changing, it started to rain towards the end of the show. Ironically, the girls pulled out the umbrella props, pulled the hair from their faces and continued on like always, dancing to “The Saints come Marching In!” an old time favorite melody of New Orleans.
The Kickers were not alone on this venture of excitement but had an entourage of supporters that doubled the number of travelers from last trip of 40 persons to 78 persons. It made for a very interesting and creative manner for gathering, especially when meeting prior to tours. Intropa was the company that handled the arrangements and ironically we had the same tour guides as before, Ope Saaga and Kiri Fualautoalasi. Of course, knowing that 25 energetic young ladies were coming, they had no objections of leading our group once again on many unforgettable ventures. The Polynesian Cultural Center was one of the first tours that gave an understanding of the culture, food, song, language, and best of all, dance. The main show, Horizons, consisted of dancers who attend the college and earn their way by performing which is similar to our interests, so it really hit home when the girls got to see a performance as well as be one.
| Another memorable visit was to the U.SS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor. After viewing the museum and tour the Kickers were granted a special VIP boat tour of the bay and its importance in history and honor. Another important tour that was requested, was the day of the event for the sailors, the dance team to board the USS Ronald Reagan active aircraft carrier. The PR for the carrier caught a glimpse of the Kickers’ pictures and announcements prior to our arrival and contacted the representative in Hawaii immediately to request our presence on the ship. We received the grand tour and really got up close and personal to the grandeur of its being. |
There was also free time to which many members of our group found new skills. We now have surfers, parasailers, big time bargain hunters, sand artists, swimmers, hula dancers, drummers (Director’s husband, Kevin and one of the kickers’ brother, Brian), coconut connoisseurs, volleyball players and many more hidden talents that just appeared on the trip.
The excursion was made possible through different types of donations and fundraisers to include holding day camps, selling the annual Cowgirl Kicker calendars and many generous contributions from the community and surrounding businesses, especially our corporate sponsor, Billy Navarre Chevrolet and Honda.
