TYPES OF GAMBLERS

There are many activities that can lead to gambling problems, such as sports betting, casino gambling, racetrack betting, scratch-offs, and the lottery. Generally, gambling behavior falls into one of three categories based on increasing problem severity.

  1. Social or recreational gambling
Most individuals who gamble fall into this category. Their gambling
activity does not create financial, social, or behavioral problems.

  2. Problem gambling
Individuals in this category experience problems related to their gambling
activity. Often including problems with family relationships and increasing
debt related to their gambling activity.

  3. Pathological gambling
This term is used to describe individuals who are experiencing a number of
problems related to their gambling activity that may include mounting debt,
relationship problems, difficulty at work, legal problems, and physical and
emotional distress. Pathological gambling is similar to chemical addictions.
An individual suffering from pathological gambling often has difficulty
controlling (e.g., stopping, reducing) their gambling behavior.

The Project is neither for nor against gambling.
