John Griswold Biographical Note

John Griswold was born in Vietnam and raised in coal country in Southern Illinois. His stories, poems, and essays have appeared in War, Literature and the Arts; Brevity; Natural Bridge; Ninth Letter and elsewhere. His work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, listed as notable in The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2009, and included in The Best Creative Nonfiction, Vol. 3 (WW Norton). Southern Illinois University's Friends of the Morris Library awarded him their 2009 Delta Award for "writing with distinction"; previous winners include Robert Coover, John Gardner, and Dick Gregory.

As Oronte Churm, John is a contributing writer for Inside Higher EdExternal Link  and a former columnist for McSweeney's Internet TendencyExternal Link and contributing editor for Adjunct Advocate.

John has taught at University of Miami and the University of Illinois, and before that was a corporate and freelance writer, manager of an ad agency, Army deep-sea diver and combat engineer, and interpretive ranger at a state park.
