Getting Started With Online Courses

Follow the steps below to get started with online courses:

  1. Apply to the College
    • If you are a first-time student at McNeese State University, you will need to complete an Application for Admissions. Students taking a course to transfer back to their home college will need to complete steps for Transfer Students.
    • If you have been a McNeese State University student enrolled in credit courses in the last year, continue #2.
  2. Contact Your Advisor
    • If you are planning to apply your distance learning courses toward a certificate or degree, you need to contact a faculty advisor -- either an online faculty advisor or your on-campus advisor.
    • If you are not planning to work on a certificate or degree and know exactly what you need, continue to #3.
  3. Register for Your Courses
    • Complete Registration including the course(s) you wish to take and your chosen payment method. If your application is processed or you're currently a student at the college, you may use the Banner Self Service to register for your classes.
  4. Pay Your Tuition and Fees
    • You will need to pay your tuition and fees by the "last day to pay" date for the term. Follow this link for information on <node 613"="">tuition and fees. Follow this link for refund information.
  5. Order Your Textbooks
    • Order your textbooks online or visit the MSU Bookstore on the McNeese State University campus.
    • You may pay for books and supplies online via credit card or charge against your PTA Account, if an account has been established at the college.
  6. Complete the Orientation
    • View the college's web-based Orientation. Be sure to explore the information for students taking online courses and any other student types that apply to you. Also check the specific orientation information for online learners at the end of this presentation.
  7. Acquaint Yourself with Course Requirements
    • Take time before courses begin to learn about your course requirements. To view requirements for a course, simply visit the course listings and click on the course and section for which you have registered.
  8. Begin Your Class
    • On or after the first day of class, try your username and password in the MyMcNeese Portal.
      • McNeese State University will use a standardized LOGIN and PASSWORD system for the MyMcNeese Portal, e-mail, and Moodle Courses. This will be the ONLY ID and password to remember.
      • All students will have "msu-" before their first initial of their first name, and complete last name up to 15 characters including the prefix of msu-. This is all in lower case. i.e. msu-jsmith
      • In the event of common last name combinations the last character will be a digit. i.e. msu-jthibodeau5
      • Note that the user ID field length is limited and truncated to 15 characters. If you type in characters longer than 15 spaces then your ID's will NOT WORK.
      • All students will use their Banner ID for their password. You must change your password after your first or second login.
