Creating Section Breaks for Pagination
Section breaks serve multiple purposes. For theses, the section breaks are used, primarily, to force certain divisions of a thesis to have specific pagination. For example, a section break will permit the author to paginate the preliminary thesis pages with Roman numerals and the subsequent pages with Arabic numerals. Without a section break, this formatting task is not possible in a single, digital document.

Creating a Table of Contents
By using Styles, an author can identify headings in a document and automate the creation of a table of contents. By using this tool, a table of contents can be easily updated if changes to the text result in changes in pagination.

Setting Tabs
In some instances, even if the table of contents creation is automated, an author may need to adjust tab stops. For example, the default tab stops in the table of contents may be .25" but are needed to be .5". Tab stops can be manually inserted or adjusted by using the horizontal ruler or a dialog box.

Adjusting Line and Paragraph Spacing
Theses must be double-spaced without any additional paragraph spacing. By default, Microsoft Word's standard "after paragraph" spacing is usually set at 10 points and line spacing at 1.15 lines. These should be adjusted to 0 points and 2.0 lines, respectively.

Using Tables
Data in theses are often presented in tables. A number of formatting options are available with tables, and understanding how to manipulate table formatting is important to meet the thesis formatting parameters.

Creating Hanging Indents for References
Most reference lists are formatting with hanging indents where the first line of an entry is aligned with the left margin and subsequent lines are indented. For theses, that indentation must be .5".
