What to Expect your First Session
You will be greeted by our front desk staff, who will ask you to fill out some initial paperwork (name, address, reasons for attending counseling), and you will also read over your assigned counselor's Declaration Statement, which goes over your counselor's qualifications, defines the counseling relationship, and explains confidentiality. Completing this paperwork usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Then, your counselor will greet you and bring you to their office. The Counselor will verbally review the Declaration Statement and Confidentiality, in addition to some other counseling center guidelines. The first session is a little bit different from other sessions. For the first session, your counselor will ask you a list of questions to get a general sense of your reasons for coming to counseling in addition to getting a lot of background information from you so that we can have a big-picture perspective of you and your concerns. Goals for counseling, and ways to achieve those goals are also usually briefly discussed in that first session.
