McNeese State University

McNeese State University (MSU) is a member of the University of Louisiana System. It was established in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College and in 1940 was renamed after a local educator. It became a four-year institution in 1950 and a university in 1970. MSU is a comprehensive institution with six Colleges (Business, Education, Engineering & Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Science) which awards associate, bachelor, master and specialist degrees. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, serving about 8500 students. MSU is a regional university as the majority of the students come from Southwest Louisiana and the second largest group of students comes from east Texas.

McNeese State University is in the city of Lake Charles, which is located in the southwest corner of the state. The city's population is approximately 72,000 while the five parish (Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson) area that comprises Southwest Louisiana contains about 275,000 people and is still growing. Lake Charles is a viable center for commerce with its deep-water port, abundance of oil and natural gas resources, a sprawling petrochemical complex and a newly established aviation refurbishing facility. The outline areas around Lake Charles are mostly agricultural with mature fishing industry to the south along the gulf coast. All of these factors lead to a very diverse and growing setting for McNeese State University.

The College of Science at MSU offers the basic service courses in the natural, physical, and mathematical sciences; specialized courses leading to academic majors in most of its departmental disciplines; and various professional and pre-professional curricula. Within the College of Science, the departments of Agricultural Sciences, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Family and Consumer Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics, and Physics offer curricula leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree. All departments are accredited by their respective State and national accreditation agencies.

The College of Engineering & Technology is one of six Colleges within the University. It consists of two departments, Engineering and Technology. The Engineering Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with concentrations in four major disciplines: Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical which is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Department of Technology offers a Bachelor of Science degree and an Associate of Science degree in Engineering Technology with concentrations in Electronics, Instrumentation, Process Plant with Technical Pathway, and Process Plant with Management Pathway (only at the B.S. level).
