Louisiana State University at Eunice
Louisiana State
University at Eunice (LSUE) is a two-year public
community college offering a variety of programs and
courses. LSUE is located in the city of Eunice,
Louisiana, in the southwestern portion of the state.
The student population is drawn primarily from the
five parishes surrounding the college, an area that
is predominantly rural and supported by an
agricultural economy.
LSUE was established as a two-year campus of the
Louisiana State University System by the LSU Board
of Supervisors on February 6, 1965. Area residents,
eager to have a college campus accessible to
students in this rural and economically depressed
area, donated 50 acres of property in Acadia Parish
for the college site. Since 1967, when the first
academic session was held, LSUE has grown from a
campus consisting of three buildings with an
enrollment of 343 students to a campus of nine
buildings, employing more than 180 faculty and
staff, and with an enrollment of close to 3,000
students. LSUE curricula are distributed mainly in
the areas of liberal arts, sciences, business and
technology, and nursing and allied health. Most
transfer courses offered at LSUE are the same as
those offered on the LSU-Baton Rouge campus for the
freshman and sophomore years.
The city of Eunice, where LSUE is located, has a
population of 11,000, while most of the remaining
towns in the five parish area surrounding LSUE are
considerably smaller. The College's student
population strongly reflects the rural, sparsely
populated, and economically depressed
characteristics of the region. The LSUE student body
has always included large numbers of
first-generation college students and
non-traditional students, including single working
mothers, displaced oil field workers, and older
students seeking professional training and
certification programs. As the only fully
accredited, degree-granting college in the area
offering a full range of Liberal Arts and technical
associate degree programs, LSUE serves a vital need
in the region.
