phthalates
Agents added to plastics to improve flexibility of the plastic. Over 25 different compounds are produced for commercial use, with di(2-ethylhexl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) being the most common. Because phthalates are used in every major category of plastic consumer products and because they are degraded slowly, phthalates are distributed throughout the environment. The level of acute toxicity of this class of compounds is very low.
