Welcome to the Department of History

Degrees:

The Department of History offers the following degrees:

- Bachelor of Arts in History (for history majors)
- Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (a broader range of courses)
- Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education (for secondary teachers)


The department also offers a minor in history and a secondary teaching area for social studies education. For students pursuing an Associate of General Studies degree, three interdisciplinary areas of concentrations (15 hours) are offered: History/Liberal Studies, Religious Studies, and Women’s Studies.

Mission Statement:

The Department of History provides education to prepare graduates for a wide variety of careers (in education, government, law, research) requiring critical thinking, analytical, and research skills that will enable them to become productive and ethically responsible citizens in a multicultural global community and value lifelong learning.

Objectives:

The objectives of the department are:

  1. To broaden students' knowledge and to enhance students' understanding of the past and the present.
  2. To prepare history majors for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
  3. To provide a minor in history for students who major in another curriculum.
  4. To introduce students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies to key concepts in the Humanities and Liberal Arts.
  5. To prepare Social Studies Education majors with a sound knowledge of appropriate Humanities and Social Science disciplines.
  6. To provide a minimum liberal education leading to an Associate of General Studies for students who plan on only two years' work at the University.
  7. To prepare exceptionally able students for graduate study.

Faculty:

Our dedicated and talented faculty, all of whom have Ph.D.s or Master’s Degrees, have the following areas of specialization.

American history: Louisiana History, Old and New South, American Women’s History, History of American Sexuality, Civil War, Military History, Colonial and Revolutionary America, African-American History, American Indian, and Modern U.S.

Western Civilization and World History: Latin America, Eastern and Western Europe, Slavery, the Third World, the Caribbean, Ireland and England.
