Do I need to know a cheer, dance, etc?
No. We will teach you the material you will be judged on. Clinics will be held in the recreational complex* prior to the tryout date to learn the fight song and cheer that you will be judged on.
How much do you practice during a semester?
Three days a week, two-hours each practice, with days to be decided on by the coach and advisor once tryouts are completed. Generally, the practices are Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays from 8:00 10:00 p.m. Extra practices may be called for special performances. The MSU Cheerleaders are actively involved with community service activities. Appearances at functions such as performing at pep rallies and academic banquets for local schools, visiting area elementary schools to read to students, and television promotions are expected and will be asked of you throughout the year.
Is a scholarship offered?
A basic first year squad member receives $500.00 per year with the scholarship increasing approximately $75.00 each year of service. Out of state fees are also waived. Additionally, you will receive a meal plan from Aramark. With your meal card you may eat in the campus dining room (up to 15 meals per week) at no charge. The value of the meal card is approximately $1,400.00 for both the fall and spring semesters.
How much does it cost to be a cheerleader?
Only a $10.00 tryout fee! McNeese purchases all uniforms, warm-ups, shoes, t-shirts, and provides travel, lodging, and meal expenses to away games. The tryout fee covers the judges' expenses.
Are tryouts open to the public?
Yes. 30 minutes prior to the tryout time (TBA), the public may enter the recreational complex.*
When are the tryout results posted?
The judges' scores are verified by the university, and all potential members' recommendations are verified the following Monday. The list of members chosen to the squad will be posted on the internet by Monday night.
What are the tryout requirements?
The minimum grade point average to try out is a 2.0. Members must maintain a 2.0 GPA and complete 12 hours per semester. You will perform a cheer and the MSU fight song. In addition, you will be required to demonstrate tumbling skills and partner stunts. You will be judged on three partner stunts of your choice. Each partner stunt will be judged on a point value system, and the number of maximum points allowed for a stunt depends on its level of difficulty. Tumbling requirements and an explanation of the partner stunt scoring system along with a list of partner stunts and their starting point values can be found at the bottom of this page. The tryout sheet will be explained to you in detail before tryouts.

Tumbling Requirements:
Standing back tuck
Running pass ending with the minimum of a back tuck
** Note that these are the minimum requirements for tumbling (girls only). A standing back handspring and running pass of only back handsprings will be scored as 0. Each skill may be attempted a maximum of three times.
Stunts:
The starting value of a stunt depends on its level of difficulty and is the maximum number of points it can receive. The score of a stunt is determined by taking the starting value and deducting that number for any mistakes in execution, control, and technique. For example, the starting value of a toss to hands is 2 points. If the stunt is executed perfectly and has no deductions for errors, it receives 2 points per judge. Deductions for errors are at each judge's discretion. Each stunt may be attempted a maximum of three times. Listed below are the starting values for each partner stunt.
