Civil Engineering - CIEN 403
FOUNDATION ENGINEERING
- Engineering properties of soil to be used in the design and earth structures, so that they are safe, functional and economical.
- Earth pressure calculations for active, at-rest, and passive conditions, using Rankine and Coulomb theories.
- Analysis and geometrical design of retaining walls. Analyzing stability of retaining walls against sliding, overturning, and bearing pressure on base.
- Analysis and design of braced excavations; calculation of strut loads.
- Analysis and design of sheet piles and bulkheads. Computer programs will be used.
- Analysis and design of earth slopes of embankments and cuts. Computer programs will be used.
- Soil compaction. Determining lab compaction curves for Standard and Modified Proctor compaction. Field compaction methods for different types of soils and field compaction control. Sand cone, volume measure, and nuclear gage method of field density check.
- Analysis and design and shallow foundations using Terzaghi and Meyerhoff theories. Square, strip, rectangular and of circular footings.
- Analysis and design of mat and ring foundations.
- Pile foundation analysis and design. Computing single pile capacity by static, dynamic, and filed load test methods. Determining group capacity of piles.
- Drilled shaft foundation analysis and design. Drilled shaft construction in different types of soils.
- Auger cast piles. Analysis and construction.
- Soil Lab tests that will be performed: Moisture content, Atterberg Limits, Sieve Analysis, Percent Fines, Constant and Falling Head Permeability Tests, Standard Compaction Test, Un-confined Compression Test, Direct Shear Test, Triaxial Compression Tests and Consolidation Test.
