When I try to include a website address
in to my course, the hyperlink does not show. How can I
make it clickable?
Make sure that you have the full URL address typed
correctly (example: http://www.mcneese.edu). Also make
sure that the Smart Text option is checked.
I cannot read a student's attachment in
Blackboard.
There are a couple of reasons why you may not be able to
read a student's attachment.
If the student is using a Macintosh computer, check to
see if the document has a file extension. All files
posted from a Mac must include an appropriate file
extension [doc, ppt, xls].
If the student is using word-processing software other
than Microsoft Word, request that assignments be saved
in either rich text format [rtf] or portable document
format [pdf].
To save a document as:
- a rich text file, students should select the Save As
feature and then select the Rich Text option.
- a portable document file, students will need Adobe
Acrobat software. This software is available on some campus
computers. And a free trial version is available at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/main.html .
Notes:
- Please include in your course syllabus specific
instructions regarding the format you require for
electronically submitted assignments. For example: "All
assignments must be submitted using one of the following
formats: Microsoft Word [doc], portable document format
(pdf) or rich text format (rtf). Reminder: Macintosh
users need to include an extension when submitting any
document (doc, pdf, rtf).
- The University computers all have Microsoft Word
installed on them for students to use.
I'm a Mac user, is there anything
special that I should be aware of when using Blackboard?
All Mac files will need a .XXX extension appropriate to
the type of file created.
You will need to add a .doc, extension to the end of
your Word file name (Extensions will differ depending on
the type of file, e.g. .GIF, .tiff, .ppt, .doc, etc.)
Save your file with the new name, then upload it to
Blackboard.
If you are having trouble opening a file posted to
Blackboard, try downloading the file to your local hard
drive, open the application that you wish to use to view
the file, then open the downloaded file from within the
application.
Are files uploaded to Blackboard automatically checked
for viruses?
No, at this time there is not a way to check for a virus
on the Blackboard server [or any Internet based server].
The best way to protect your computer/files is to have a
virus protection program like Norton AntiVirus [http://www.symantec.com/downloads/]
or McAfee [http://us.mcafee.com/] installed on your
computer.
Note: All computers in the student labs
have Norton AntiVirus running on them and are updated
automatically.
