Louisiana residents seeking admission to McNeese must have completed the TOPS/University Core Curriculum (see below), scored a minimum ACT English or Math Score of 18 (SAT=450 Verbal or 430 Math), AND have:

| First-time freshmen who are graduates of state-approved out-of-state high schools must meet ALL admission criteria in ONE of the following groups: Group 1:
- Completion of Board of Regents’ High School Core Curriculum;
- Minimum ACT English or Math score of 18 (SAT Verbal score of 450 or Math score of 430);
- One of the following:
- Minimum cumulative, unweighted high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; OR
- Minimum composite ACT score of 20 (SAT score of 940); OR
- Rank in the upper 50% of the high school graduating class.
Group 2:
- Minimum composite ACT score of 20 (SAT score of 940);
- Minimum ACT English or Math score of 18 (SAT Verbal score of 450 or Math score of 430);
- Minimum cumulative, unweighted high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale;
Group 3:
- Minimum composite ACT score of 23 (SAT score of 1060);
- Minimum ACT English or Math score of 18 (SAT Verbal score of 450 or Math score of 430).
In addition to the above admission requirements, non-resident first-time freshmen and non-resident transfer students who have earned fewer than 12 college-level hours must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:
1. Attain a composite score of at least 17 on the ACT or 810 on the SAT, OR
2. Attain a composite score of at least 16 on the ACT or 760 on the SAT and have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.50 in a high school curriculum comparable to that required in Louisiana and rank in the upper 50 percent of the high school graduating class OR
3. Attain a composite score of at least 15 on the ACT OR 710 on the SAT and have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.75 in a high school curriculum comparable to that required in Louisiana and rank in the upper 40 percent of the high school graduating class.

Students who do not achieve the minimum ACT/SAT English or Math score are encouraged to participate in McNeese's summer bridge program called PASS. Students who successfully complete a PASS English or Math course, and who meet all other minimum admissions criteria, may be admitted to the University.

The following courses are required for admission to four-year Louisiana public colleges and universities.
- 4 English I, II, III and IV
- 1 Algebra I (one unit) or Applied Algebra IA and IB (two units)
- 1 Algebra II
- 1 Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus or an approved math substitute
- 1 Biology
- 1 Chemistry
- 1 Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics, Physics II or Physics for Technology
- 1 American History
- 1 World History, Western Civilization or World Geography
- 1 Civics and Free Enterprise (one unit combined) or Civics (one unit, non-public)
- 1 Fine Arts Survey (or substitute two units of performance courses in music, dance and/or theater; or two units of visual art; or substitute two units of studio art; or substitute one unit of an elective from among the other subjects listed in this core)
- 2 Foreign Language (two units in the same language)
- 1/2 Computer Science, Computer Literacy or Business Computer
Applications (or substitute at least one- half unit of an elective course
related to computers approved by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and
Secondary Education or one-half unit as an elective from among the other
subjects listed in this core curriculum)
- 1* Effective with high school graduates of 2008, core curriculum will increase from 16 ½ units to 17 ½ units. The additional unit of must be chosen from the following: Geometry, Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Algebra III, Probability & Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Applied Mathematics III, Advanced Mathematics I, Advanced Mathematics II, Integrated Mathematics III, Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics, or Physics II
