Policy and Procedures for Students with Learning Disabilities

Students who would like to request a reasonable accommodation should be referred to the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. This office makes the determination for offering students a reasonable accommodation or additional referrals, including testing.

All students who receive reasonable accommodations as a result of a learning disability diagnosed from a public school system or a specialist must be interviewed by the Director of Services for Students with Disabilities to determine eligibility for services.

All services and requests for a reasonable accommodation must begin with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities and must be approved by this Office.

Documentation for a learning disability must be current, within 3-5 years depending on the type of disability. Students with outdated documentation and who need testing will be referred to the Counseling Center. Students may also elect to contact an off-campus professional for completion of the testing requirements.

Once tested, the results must be hand-delivered or mailed to the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. The student will be required to sign a release form, from a professional service or from the MSU Counseling Center, which gives permission to send the results to the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities, for a final determination of eligibility.

The appropriate services and accommodations for each student is determined by the Director after receipt of the results of a test, appropriate and current documentation, or by other means as determined by the Director. Faculty should only accept documentation for a reasonable accommodation from the Director of the Office of Special Services and Equity. Faculty will receive a Letter of Reasonable Accommodation from the Director in the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities when a student is approved for a reasonable accommodation for a learning disability.
