SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Professor’s Responsibilities

It is the professor’s responsibility to get the exam to our office in a timely manner. You can call our office at ext.5916 and we will try to send someone to pick up the exam if we are given enough time to do so.

If a student has a test at 8:00 am, then we need to have that exam the day before or at least by 7:45 am. We are having to track down tests at 8:00 in the morning. This takes away from the student’s time allowed to take the exam. It also causes students to get anxious and nervous. If a student does not get extended testing time, but does receive distraction-free environment, then they are not receiving the full allotted class time that everyone else receives and they then have difficulty concentrating due to them becoming anxious from waiting for the exam.

We keep all tests locked in a file cabinet and we monitor all students testing at our facility. As of the present, we have never lost a test. We have implemented sign in and out sheets for when we are delivering test back to the proper department. This way if a test does go missing, we are able to look in the book and see who signed for the exam. This will help to keep track of exams from becoming lost. All tests are brought back to the appropriate department secretary unless otherwise noted. The secretary will place the test in the instructor’s departmental mailbox. We do not mail tests through Campus Mail or slide tests under doors.

Students are not allowed to miss another class in order to take a test. Professors may give the student a different test if it is “weighted the same”. Professors may not give the class an objective test such as a scantron test and give the disabled student a test in a different format such as an essay test.

If a professor chooses to provide the accommodation themselves, they are expected to contact this office to make sure they are properly providing the accommodations required by the ADA. The professor has the right to provide the accommodations if they wish as long as they are provided correctly. Example: Distraction-free does not mean placing a student in your office or a location where the telephone is ringing or people are constantly coming and going. If you have to move a student to another classroom then you are responsible for monitoring that student.

****Our office provides you with a page of Testing Instructions. These are to be used by professors to help our department become more efficient. They are strictly optional, but many times professors ask me “Why did the student take their test at this time, when the class meets at another time?” The testing instructions list lets us know exactly what the student is to have available when testing and at what time that student is suppose to take the test. If you need a copy of Testing Instructions call us at 475-5916.
