In case of emergencies evenings, weekends, or holidays, please call University Police at
337-475-5711.

The Counseling Center assists students with regards to their personal development and mental health needs. College presents new and difficult challenges to all students and meeting these challenges can affect one's self-concept far into the future.

Services are available at no charge to all students, faculty, and staff in the University. The center makes available counseling to assist students with personal adjustment and offer marital counseling as long as one partner is enrolled. Psychological and aptitude assessment is available by appointment. Students are encouraged to telephone for appointments but walk-in appointments are available as time permits.

Confidentiality of counseling sessions is strictly maintained and records of the center are kept separate from other McNeese University student records. No content information will be released to a student's family or other University departments without the student's knowledge and written consent. The only exception to the above procedure is in the event of an emergency, a life threatening event, or through a requirement from a court.

Students faced with decisions that require careful consideration and additional information, whether in the area of personal concerns or academic matters, are invited to use the services offered by the Counseling Center.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT

Appointments to see a counselor may be made with the secretary in the Counseling Center, Kaufman Hall, Room 167 or by calling 337-475-5136.

During the initial interview with a counselor, the client and counselor will discuss the client's concerns and make a decision on how to proceed. This decision may include further counseling at the Center, referral to another treatment source, or referral to an information source.

Requests such as seeing a particular staff member or scheduling appointments outside normal operating hours will be honored if possible. Clients are encouraged to make appointments, but counselors are available for "walk-ins" during times of crisis.

The Center is open between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, throughout the calendar year except official university holidays. After hours emergencies may be reported to the University Police and they will contact a counselor for you.

COSTS

Counseling Center services are provided to the students, administration, faculty, and staff of the University at no charge.

If an outside treatment referral is made, the community agency or private practitioner to whom you are referred probably will have a fee for services. The cost of these services becomes your responsibility. When referrals become necessary, your counselor will discuss a full range of referral options with you
